With the slogan “Stop femicide!” , while denouncing the alarming number of murders of women and girls in the African nation, police forces used tear gas.
One of the participants in the protest, Julius Kamau, weighed the value of the Constitution and respect for women’s lives in a patriarchal system where police data alone shows that 97 feminicides occurred between August and November 2024, most of them by their partners,
“The Constitution is very clear and everyone must be true to the Kenyan Constitution, including the police. They chase us like children. We are here to protest against the killing of people, women and girls. It is happening everywhere. Our lives don’t matter in this country. How long will we live like this?” Kamau reflected.
According to statements by the platform Africa News, activists questioned how law enforcement has handled feminicide cases, protesting against the escape from police cells of a suspect who confessed to killing 42 women, after dismembered bodies were found stuffed in plastic bags and dumped into a flooded quarry.
Meanwhile, a recent report by the United Nations (UN) revealed that Africa has the highest rate of femicide in the world in the hands of couples and ex-partners.
